I’ve been interested in Longfellow ever since I read The Dante Club (which touches upon his translation of Dante, his grief, the fallout of the Civil War/its trauma, and has some murder mystery thrown in-highly recommend). I’d never heard of that hymn before though, going to reading and meditating upon it for sure-it packs quite the gut punch
I don't think many people who sing "I Heard The Bells..." in December understand the circumstances out of which it emerged and what forces shaped the words. You do that here very well.
