Mother Teresa once said that the great epidemic of our time was loneliness. Trouble comes to everyone, but it makes a huge difference if you have someone to walk through problems with you, someone to be strong when you are weak, someone who needs you.

I have lived in large cities, the suburbs, and the country. My experience is that life in the country is a bit easier because, with fewer people, those that are in trouble stand out. The ratio of givers and takers is in better balance so that some of the obvious need is addressed by people who want others to find a way out of their pain. In large cities, the numbers would be overwhelming; the help of one person would be a drop in the ocean of human misery. Wherever we find ourselves, though, we have something to offer to those around us. Everyone can do something, and every little bit helps.
